Together with the artist Maryna Makarenko, who was born in the Ukrainian industrial city of Shostka, I developed a performance in 2024 that explores the myths, rumors, and enigmas surrounding the history of the Soviet Svema film factory. Using elements of visual art, voice, body, and electronic music, Makarenko took the audience on a journey of discovery through the film factory. In her performance, earthly and mythical beings, the real and the fictional, intertwine to form a narrative about the conditions of women’s labor, human bodily fluids, and the materiality of the film factory itself.
