Former fire department Wolfen, Germany
2024

The region around Bitterfeld-Wolfen was long considered to be the dirtiest in Europe. The contaminated groundwater must be continuously pumped and filtered, and due to soil pollution, homegrown vegetables in the city were inedible for decades.

masharu has been working on a living archive of edible soils for many years. The goal of their Museum of Edible Earth is to assemble an extensive collection of soils from as many countries as possible that can be safely consumed.

For the OSTEN Festival in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, masharu and I developed the idea for a workshop featuring a soil tasting. The audience was invited to learn more about edible earth, to eat soil, to share their taste experiences, and to engage in conversation about their own relationship to the earth.
